The Netherlands is a dream destination for many, especially when tulip season comes around in spring. People from all over the world – including South Africa – flock to this beautiful country to experience its iconic tulip fields in full bloom. I’ve met quite a few South Africans over the years who have made the long journey just to see the fields, and for many, it’s a bucket list item they’ve been waiting to tick off.
But, here’s the thing: while the tulips are absolutely stunning, some spots, like Keukenhof Gardens, can get incredibly crowded, especially during peak times. If you’re planning to visit, you’ll need to plan ahead to make the most of the experience. Here’s what you need to know:
The Best Places to See Tulips in the Netherlands
If you’re planning to visit the Netherlands during tulip season, make sure to start with the Tulip Festival Amsterdam, running from Thursday, 20 March to Sunday, 11 May 2025. This festival is the perfect way to experience tulips in full bloom, not just in Amsterdam but throughout the country. Be sure to follow the festival on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, or subscribe to their free newsletter for updates and tips on making the most of your visit.
Once you’re in the Netherlands, there are several stunning locations to explore. Keukenhof Gardens, near Lisse, is the iconic tulip destination. Open from 21 March to 12 May, it boasts miles of scenic walking trails and vibrant gardens, but it can get quite crowded, especially around Easter. To avoid the rush, booking your tickets in advance is essential.
For a more relaxed experience, head to Bollenstreek, just a short drive from Amsterdam. This picturesque region, spanning Lisse, Hillegom, and Noordwijkerhout, is home to many tulip fields that can be explored by car or bike, allowing you to soak in the beauty at your own pace.
If you’re looking for a quieter and less touristy option, Flevoland, located about 45 minutes from Amsterdam, is the ideal spot. With the largest flower farming area in the country, it offers peaceful cycling routes through endless fields of tulips, far from the crowds.

Getting to the Tulip Fields
- Keukenhof: You can easily reach Keukenhof from Amsterdam by taking the Keukenhof Express Bus or driving (parking costs around €10 a day). It’s also close to Schiphol airport and other cities like Haarlem and Rotterdam, making it a convenient destination.
- By Bike: Cycling is one of the best ways to explore the tulip fields. Rent a bike from Hillegom station and take a scenic ride through the blooming landscapes at your own pace.
Unique Tulip Experiences to Enjoy
- Tulip Barn: A fantastic spot for photos, the Tulip Barn is home to over 500,000 tulips. With designated selfie areas and ever-changing blooms, it’s the perfect place to snap that iconic tulip photo.
- Guided Bike Tours: If you prefer a guided experience, consider booking a bike tour. The tour takes you through the flower fields, Keukenhof Castle, and nearby greenhouses, with insights from a local guide.
- Flower Parade: If you’re in the Netherlands during April, the Bloemencorso Bollenstreek flower parade is a must-see. This vibrant parade moves through Noordwijk, Lisse, and Haarlem, showcasing spectacular floral floats. You can enjoy it from the roadside or book a seat in the grandstands for a more comfortable experience.
- Helicopter Tour: For the most spectacular view of the rainbow-hued fields, consider taking a helicopter tour! These 10-15 minute flights are available on select days during the tulip season and offer a bird’s-eye view of the stunning tulip fields. But be quick—these flights sell out fast! Alternatively, you can go on a guided tulip safari by Land Rover for a unique and exciting way to explore the fields.
Tips for a Smooth Visit
When planning your visit to the tulip fields, timing is key. Keukenhof and other popular spots can fill up fast, especially during peak hours. To make the most of your experience, try to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon, ideally on weekdays. This will help you avoid the crowds and enjoy the tulips in a more relaxed atmosphere.
It’s also important to respect the fields. Tulip farmers cultivate these flowers for their bulbs, not for visitors to walk through. Be mindful and stay on the designated paths to avoid causing damage to the crops. This ensures you can enjoy the beauty of the fields without harming the delicate flowers.
Lastly, be prepared for the unpredictable spring weather. It can change quickly, so it’s a good idea to pack layers and bring a waterproof jacket. That way, you’ll stay comfortable no matter what the weather brings during your visit.
Whether you’re visiting for the festival or simply to admire the beauty of the flowers, the tulips of the Netherlands are sure to leave you in awe!
