Halloween in the Netherlands: What Expats Need to Know

Halloween isn’t really a thing in South Africa, but in the Netherlands, it’s growing fast! Here, expats and locals alike are getting into the spooky spirit with costumes, themed parties, and Halloween décor popping up all over. While Dutch Halloween isn’t as full-blown as in the United States, there are still plenty of ways to celebrate on 31 October.

Halloween in the Netherlands

Halloween has only recently gained traction in the Netherlands, thanks to its international community. Many locals join in on costume parties and spooky-themed gatherings, but traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating is still uncommon outside major cities.

A Dutch Alternative: Sint-Maarten

For Dutch kids, Sint-Maarten on 11 November is the local equivalent, where children go door-to-door with lanterns, singing songs for sweets. It honours Martin of Tours, a French bishop known for his generosity, famously sharing his cloak with a freezing beggar. Originating with the Catholic Church, Sint-Maarten once marked the end of autumn and the harvest season. It’s a tradition you might enjoy if you have kids and the opportunity to do Halloween treat rounds.
